FUCK Microsoft!

My fucking XBox 360 has kicked the bucket again. It is a year old for fuck sake... my 20 year old C64 still fucking works, as do all my other consoles. My 6 year old Playstation 2 is still doing great.

Fuck M$. I think it's time to buy a PS3. I won't have any games to play but atleast it will fucking work when I turn it on.

If only I lived in Singapore/Jakarta/Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne

Helloween are currently touring in Europe, promoting their latest album with Gamma Ray (my favourite band), who are also promoting their latest album.

I've just read news that Helloween are coming to this part of the world in February 2008 .. unfortunately, GR won't be... Black Majesty (an Aussie band who I quite like also) will be playing the Australian leg, not sure who is supporting the SE Asia part of the tour.

It's unfortunate cos if GR were coming, I'd spend the money to travel in an instant. I saw them in Sydney in December 2006 (thinking it was one of maybe a few chances that I'd ever get to see them), and it was the best show! The crowd, although a little small (but the venue was small too), were going nuts!

But I just can't bring myself to spending close to 1K to see Helloween (I personally think Andi Deris butchers the old classic Helloween tracks) and Black Majesty (or whatever support act in SE Asia). If I were living in those cities then I would go see them (as then it would only be $70 odd for tickets) ... Ah well... Maybe GR will change their minds and come down to Singapore? That would be a miracle, and I'd be there in an instant....

Planning / Saving for another holiday

You know, it's true what they say ... that you start planning / saving for the next holiday right after you've had one.

In actual fact, the plans for the next holiday (KL/Sing Sep/Oct 08) were already in plannings long before my recent trip to Sydney with CB, but it was only yesterday when I sat down and ballparked everything and came up with a quasi savings plan.

Looks like I'll be saving quite a bit of cash in order to go in 9 months time. I need more money.....

Giant Yankee Burger - Nobody has pulled it off?

So I did a quick look online on the 'Giant Yankee Burger Challenge' and have been unable to find anyone who has finished it?

Hollow Legs blog entry

Surely someone has .. someone must've done better than my effort?

One of the most ridiculous things I've heard .. I'd try it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turducken

A Turducken is a partially de-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed with a small de-boned chicken.

I'd probably try it if it was available in a restaurant somewhere ..

...I found it funny

I was looking at someones Boulder Dash site (an old Commodore 64 game) and came across this. I found it funny and brings back memories of my Calculus units back in high school and university. I do remember learning limits (like above), but don't ask me to remember all the theorems and shit learnt from uni....

Hot and Humid

So we're looking at low 30°C in Perth today, with high humidity (>90%). It feels a little like Singapore, but without the greenery, the cheap and tasty food, the Starbucks, the great train system, cheap arcade games etc etc. However, we do have heaps of Asians...

Connect-4 Champion 2007

So the power went out for a little over half an hour or so yesterday, so CB and I killed some time playing Connect-4. During the second game, the power came back on. It was a fight to the end, going to a third and decisive game. On the last game, I put myself into a position which secured my victory and with that, declared myself Connect-4 Champion for 2007!

As Johnny Drama from Entourage would shout ... "Victory!!!!!"

Guitar Hero 3 ... hmmm

So I got the full version of GH3, and have played through about 36 or so of the 42 song career mode .. the demo was good but the actual game itself is a bit lacking...

I don't know if it's just high expectations, but this time round, things seem more "boring". Sure, the song lineup has more well known artists, but the songs themselves aren't as good in my opinion as the 2nd one, where there was more variety.

And on Expert, the way the tabs are layed out leave a little to be desired. With GH2, I could recognise how they transcribed real tabs to the 5 buttons on the GH guitar. Some button combinations actually resemble chords and some of the riffs and leads are scaled nicely on the 5 button layout. However, this time around, some of the chords are just weird, only to bump up difficulty, but do not resemble any chords that I've ever played on a real guitar.

I don't have the same drive to try and get 5 stars on all songs, simply cos the songs are more boring to play than their GH2 equivalents. Oh and the difficulty gets BS hard on Export towards the end, there doesn't seem to be any linearity in it ...

All in all, the whole experience for me has just been 'OK'... a bit different from the rave reviews I've been reading. I'm hoping Rock Band (made by Harmonix, who made the last 2 Guitar Heros but not GH3) will be better tabbed out....

Nightwish coming Down Under

I saw on a few websites earlier on that Nightwish were rumoured to come to Australia, as part of their Dark Passion Play tour. I thought to myself that if they came down to SE Asia or over on the east coast that I'd take some time off and go see them (they are high on my list but not my most favourite band).

Well I don't need to, cos they are coming to Perth! Well, Fremantle actually but still closer than the east coast. I've got my ticket, so they better not cancel!

Unfortunately it is the new Nightwish lineup without Tarja (and the operatic vocals), who I would've loved to have seen, but at least West Australians haven't been forgotten this time around! woot woot!

48Mj of heat ... all the heat you will ever need..

I received my burner (see below) early last week and have been itching to try it out. So over last weekend, I hooked it up and gave it a go. I am very impressed!

This thing is so hot that the tea towel I was using to hold the wok caught fire from combustion. I had it on about half and the wok was smoking after less than 10 seconds, put in the oil and it was smoking after 5. Stir-frying is actually stir-frying .. not boiling .. and the oil smell and frying food brings me back to hawker centres in Singapore.

If only I could have 48Mj indoors .. cooking outside is a bit of a pain. It would be a bit smokey inside though so I guess that's a plus.....

Guitar Hero 3 demo rocked

Yesterday, I recently got hold of the 5 song Guitar Hero 3 demo.. needless to say, I cranked the difficulty to Expert and went for broke.

I have a feeling GH3 will be easier than GH2 on Expert (although I watched a youtube vid of 'Through the Fire and Flames' and I think my fingers will bleed after that song), but with supposedly over 70 tracks and more available to download (and pay for), it should last a while ... definitely looking forward to some new tracks!

And coming out next year (in Australia anyway) is Rock Band, which also adds drums, bass and vox! So rhythm goodness for the next few months! oooooh yeh.

I need a holiday...

I think my body/mind is telling me I need a holiday .. I keep looking at Singapore pics and wanting to go back .... yum. Going to Sydney in a month and a half but I'm not sure if it's a big enough of a change (or long enough) to feel like a holiday.

Which brings me to my next question .. go somewhere familiar or somewhere new? I would treat Singapore as other Perth families treat Mandurah/Lancelin etc. A familiar place to go and escape the everyday grind. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of weekend holidays to Sing. It's a place where I don't really have to look up what to do or where to go, but keep going back and doing the same things over and over and enjoy it everytime doing so.

But whilst I love Singapore for everything that it is and what it offers, I still want to see other sites. I want to see Japan (for the cars and the food), go to the States, go to London and eat at Royal Hospital Road, go through Europe and see many of the bands that I frequently listen to... the only real places which don't really interest me are: South America, Africa, Middle East, Russia and China. Should I go on one big uber holiday? Or break it up into bits and pieces?

I know why international artists don't come back to Perth

Why? Cos they take a look at the shitty venues that we offer them to play at, and they simply go WTF and never come back.

Josh Groban and Challenge Stadium... got there a little before 6:30 to find a long queue of cars trying to get into the venue. Parking was already full (we ended up parking in a park near the venue and legging it in), with more people trying to get in.

And the seats? Fuck .. $130 for plastic seats which made my ass sore after sitting for a few hours. I also had to sit on an angle and my back was a bit hammered after the show. Sydney gets to sit in the lovely Opera House, with brilliant acoustics and we get shithouse Challenge Stadium......

And what was Josh Groban like? Well, he was on the 'Awake' tour, and he certainly let us know that, playing just about every song on the album. Good if you love the album, not so good if you prefer his older stuff.

Give me POWER....

I bought myself a birthday present... In my quest to get wok hei at home, I've bought this bad boy. It puts out a max of 48 megajoules of energy (our household stove is about 30 megajoules from 4 burners), so it should be plenty hot to cook (burn) food with.

I'd love to mount this into an old barbeque or weber shell, make it a bit more safer to use. I'll cross that bridge when I come across it .. I'm just impatiently waiting for this bad boy to arrive....

Whats the point of an online presence?

Something that's really hit me these past few weeks are the number of companies who have an online presence (a website or email address), but do nothing with it. A number of companies I've emailed asking for distributors in WA and gotten no response.

The icing on the cake was today, when I wanted to buy tickets for the Spicks and Specks live show. BOCS allow you to buy online... all I experienced were slow load times and when I actually got allocated tickets, put in my credit card details and went to pay, it timed out. Not once, not twice, but 4 or 5 times. It then said my reservation had been cancelled cos I took too long to pay.

So I tried again. More slow load times. I eventually got allocated shitter tickets, went to pay again and same thing. I wasn't the only one trying to get tickets. What the fuck is the point of having an online buying system if nobody can buy tickets? So you can only buy tickets when nobody else wants to .. which means shit seats? That is bullshit.

Halo 3 is a bit overrated

So far (7 out of 9 missions) .. I think Bioshock has been a better experience than Halo 3 ... nuf said.

Received a love tap on Friday

Last Friday, on the way home from work, a guy in a WRX CS9 decided to run into the back of me on Alexander Drive. I was in the right lane, and traffic had stopped, the WRX was in the left and decided to gun it into the right (to overtake a bus on the left), only to notice that traffic had stopped.

I saw him gun it and dart across, and then slam on the brakes (no screeching as they have ABS). He almost made it and then boom .. he hit me.

Turned off onto a side street, looked at the car and I couldn't see any damage to the paint or the bumper (made of plastic, not metal). Lucky... He actually fared worse than me (paint on his bumper had cracked). I would normally be pissed, but for some reason, I wasn't, probably cos it wasn't my fault...

Reason why Perth has a speeding problem...

I know why there is a "speeding problem" in Perth. It's because the traffic control system encourages us to do so. If the traffic lights were actually timed together so they were all green if you obeyed the limit, there would be no incentive to speed. However in it's current state, if you go the speed limit, you are met with red light after fucking red light.

Ten Pin Bowling

Went for a bowl on Saturday night with Laped at Warwick (the closest one and Fairlanes is now shut). It's been the first time in Perth for ages now, I actually can't remember when, although the last time I went bowling was Singapore 2006.

Armed with my bowling ball drilled for my fingers (7 years ago), I initially bowled 3 gutters... hahaha. I pulled it back and finished with 111.

Second game, I bowled a respectable 155. I missed 4 spares and dropped 4 pins in the entire game >:-( I was actually close to beating my highest score of 166 but couldn't spare the 10th ... bugger.

I quite enjoy bowling, but at $23.20, it is relatively expensive here. In Singapore, games were like $4 or so each!

Perth City planners suck!

With the jump in population WA has seen with the mining boom in the recent years, the roads (especially in peak hour) have seemed to get worse. But instead of fixing the problem, the local councils and Main Roads have done some utter stupid moves .. here's a few that I experience every day:

Beaufort Street
Anyone who lives north east of Perth and works in/near the city will know the pain in the ass that is Beaufort Street. The Town of Vincent decided that parking on the road during the day is OK but is a clearway in peak hour. This simply has not worked, even if the Ranger is out issuing fines for infringing parkers. I think it should be better to tow the fuckers away, as 1 car can make a whole lot of mess in the Mt Lawley area.

Further down, near Inglewood, the stupid bus lane restricts peak hour traffic to ONE lane. What makes it worse is that people wish to turn right onto side streets and can stop traffic completely. People who travel on the bus lane risk getting a fine as sometimes there are pigs who pull over motorists using it. Yep .. very smart...

Fitzgerald Street
So Beaufort Street is a shit to drive on, the next best option is to take Fitzgerald. However, at the moment, there are roadworks for the second time this year, in the same location. After the first month or so stint of roadworks, they resurfaced it, made it all nice and smooth only to rip it up again. What is even worse, is that they are doing roadworks DURING peak hour, stopping traffic to get trucks through etc etc. Smart one that.

William Street
Some bright spark decided to make a 4 lane road to 2 lanes. Enough said.

The only other alternative for north easters is Guildford Road and is just as busy. And public transport is shit. With the amount of extra tax the government is getting, along with one of the biggest housing booms (and extra stamp duty to boot), you'd think some of it could be used to further develop our roads and traffic problem. However, it appears they wish to do the exact opposite.

Char Kway Teow, without the char...

I'll be the first to admit that I love food. I'm not sure if I love eating or cooking it more. Whilst I mainly draw inspiration from European cuisine, I thought I'd try something a little closer to home, especially after seeing a relatively simple recipe on a Food Safari trailer on SBS.

With a quick shop of ingredients and everything chopped and prepared, I made a batch of noodles. And how did it turn out? From a taste perspective, it wasn't bad but I would not call it Char Kway Teow. It did not have what the Cantonese call "wok hei" (have a look on Wikipedia). I don't believe that wok hei is derived simply from heat, as I had Mum's trusty (and well seasoned) wok on the point of smoking... it must be the amount of oil and the type of oil used too... I could be wrong though...

My version of Char Kway Teow (ok I'll stop calling it that) definitely is less greasy, but it just isn't the same.

I have 5.1 again!

This week, I decided to get rid of my old 5.1 sound system and replace it with a set of Logitech Z5500 speakers. My main reason was because at times, the old POS system would sometimes be a 4.1 or even a 3.1 system, which would only be remedied by time or a hard thud on the amp/sub.

The Logitech system is supposedly THX certified, with 500w of power! I have a THX demo DVD which sounds great on it, Michael Buble is pretty good and Bioshock on XBox360 is in another league!

Allergic reaction .. my first from memory

Yesterday I experienced my first allergic reaction .. that I remember anyway. One of my work colleagues made some carob fudge (after discussion on carob as a chocolate substitute last friday).

After eating a piece, my throat was incredibly itchy (like hayfever but worse) but I couldn't sneeze. After awhile, I felt a little wheezy and felt my throat was blocked up a bit. Following that, my eyes were red and watery, nose was blocked and couldn't stop sneezing. An hour later, but things were returning back to normal, although this morning I woke up with a sore throat...

I'm not sure what I'm allergic to.. I've had carob before when I was a lot younger and had no problems then. There was also coconut and something else in it, both which I've never had such a reaction to... Next time, no chocolate substitute for me .. only the real deal!

My XBox 360 died but is alive again

A few weeks ago, my XBox 360 decided to call it a day and give me the red ring of death. Fortunately for the Internet, there are numerous postings on how to change the X-Clamps which are thought to be the cause of GPU related issues (error code 0102 and 0103 from memory).

After numerous trips to get different parts (3 trips in total) she was only running for a new minutes before locking up (but no more RRoD). A few more tweaks and it has been running fine since.

I ordered some better fans which have just arrived today, put my 360 back together and hopefully it'll be good from now on. It does sound like a vacuum cleaner when turned on, but aslong as it stays cool enough and withstands long Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Halo 3, GH3, Rock Band and GTA IV sessions, then I'll be a happy boy.

No longer Darts champion

A while ago, I bought a magnetic darts set for work, and it has turned out to be quite a hit among some of us in the office. We have a mini competition to see who can get the highest darts score from 3 darts, from a line laid out with sticky tape on the carpet. There is even a leaderboard on the whiteboard in the cubicle were I sit.

After several weeks at the top (with a score of 134 and then 140), I have now been beaten. I have to gather 6 more points to beat the now high score of 145. I think it will take sometime for this score to be beaten...

Guitar Hero Junkie

I came across this game at a Harvey Norman store.. picking up the plastic guitar and rocking out to one of the songs. Immediately, I was hooked!

Since that day, I've played all of the current GH titles, and even a non legit hacked version (the song selection was good (quite a bit of metal) but the guitar mappings weren't on time and a bit shit). I can play Expert and do relatively well, although I'm not good enough to get 5 stars on every song.

GH1 was fun but without hammer ons and pull offs, made hitting 5 stars a very hard task.
GH2 (played on PS2 and 360 :) ) is a lot more challenging in the later stages, with Hangar 18, Freebird and Institutionalized causing headaches for me.
GH Encore (the 80s version) didn't have a lot of good songs in my opinion. I have one song to finish (Play With Me) on Expert which at the moment is way too hard at the end and I fail.

With GH3 and Rock Band (with Drums!) coming up later this year, I definitely am gonna get my rhythm game fix. Especially looking forward to GH3 and DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames ... that one is gonna make my fingers bleed....

Cats... I hate them

I'll be the first to admit that I'm no cat lover. They are annoying little shits who only want you when they are hungry, the kill wildlife and their owners fucking leave them out at night and don't give a shit what they get up to. I often make a joke of speeding up whenever I see a cat on the road, but honestly I wouldn't do it only cos it'd do damage to my car.

There is a new cat in our area who is making all kinds of noises at night, waking me up. And to top it all off, it's all over my car in the wee hours of the morning. I'd really love to find out whose cat it is, so I could give them a piece of my mind but unfortunately, that info is not known.
